Gates of the Mountains
Helena, MT
Sun, July 11, 2021

Come with us to enjoy an inspiring and informative Sunday boat ride thru Gates of the Mountains, named by Meriwether Lewis when he and the Corps of Discovery paddled thru in their canoes in 1805.

"This evening we entered much the most remarkable clifts what we have yet seen. These cliffs rise from the waters edge on either side perpendicularly to the height of 1200 feet . . . from the singular appearance of this place, I called it the Gates of the Rocky Mountains."  - Meriwether Lewis, July 19, 1805

During our 2-hour open-aired boat cruise you'll experience the same breathtaking views that Meriweather Lewis enjoyed, along with possible wildlife like eagles, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, ospreys, and birds of prey. You may even catch a glimpse of an otter or black bear.

We'll also make a stop at Headwaters State Park to walk in more of the footsteps of Lewis & Clark. Here, where the Missouri River starts its 2,300 hundred mile trek, you'll see the exact spot where Lewis stood and later wrote about in his journal:

" . . . walked up the S.E. fork (Missouri River) and ascended the point of a high limestone clift from whence I commanded a most perfect view of the neighboring country . . . "
